In lieu of

I went for a walk this morning in lieu of yoga - only 30 minutes, but I give myself points for getting out at all. I had breakfast and then walked around the neighbourhood, getting back before 10 a.m. Even then, I returned to the house sweating profusely, it was already so hot.

The rest of the day I spent moving a small portable fan to whatever room I was going to spend time in, so that I could dry off. It is such a curse to sweat the way I do when it's humid. It doesn't happen in normal circumstances, but I sure react to humidity.

I remember how awful it was for me the summer I was pregnant with Jordan, living in Ontario. He was born in November, and I spent the hot and humid summer of '73 trying to stay cool with not much success - we didn't buy an air conditioner until much later, when we lived in our townhouse. Whenever we could, we went to one of the malls, where we could windowshop in air-conditioned delight. It didn't help that I was absolutely huge when I was pregnant, so I felt, and looked, like a perspiring elephant!

This heat wave, on record as being a record, has certainly interfered with my plans to be very active on these holidays.

I did notice, today, that thanks to my yoga camp the week before, I have much more mobility in stretches - that makes me feel very good!
